In Canon books they are only ever ridden by males, sometimes bisexual but mostly straight. (In fandom, the restrictions have been relaxed and they can be Impressed to females, however this does not apply at Arolos)

Browns are the third largest of the dragons all there is some overlap and for an important backbone of the fighting wing with their capacity for stamina and flame projection substantial. In personality they tend to be father figures. They are calming, powerful creatures who seem inherently secure and provide the emotional "glue" as it were that binds a wing together. In terms of hierarchy are content to be in second position; they may chase the gold, but feel the pain less when they do not catch her and the few who do are thrilled, but do not wish to take over leadership with the winning of the flight. That doesn't help their rider much though. You win the goldflight you take the Weyrleadership!

Possibly because of their stability and lesser ambition in getting a gold Browns have much better luck in using their memories, and as such can remember the things every wingleader needs their wingsecond to remember. Hence brownriders frequently end up as Wingseconds or Wingleaders as they provide the continuity required in a fighting wing, and the ability to disseminate information rapidly and enough leadership, potential to act on their initiative AND follow orders. A rare combination and one to be respected
They are kinder in deed than a bronze; they will make sure the greens and blues rest in Fall, often grounding someone who is trying hard to overfly in their enthusiasm to keep up. This is where they are most assertive and they can impose a certain force of will if they believe a wingmate is threatened.

Brown dragons are emotionally calm dragons and can seem dour or a little too stolid at times; they're not, and will often go out of their way to ease tensions in the wing and between other dragons. They can lead, but are not as highly attuned to it and they usually lead by consensus rather than the "follow me" attitude of the bronzes.

Browns like mating flights as well, but unlike a bronze, the NEED to reproduce is less urgent. But the need to practice seems just as prevalent!
