Searchriders and WatchridersEntered by: Mandy Date: 2006-08-25 Relevant to: Arolos and DF Summary: Description of what a Searchrider and Watchrider are and do along with responsibilities of the roles. For a complete picture of the Wing see the articles on Wingriders, Wingleaders, Wingseconds and Wingthirds. Article: Basic informationBoth Watchrider and Searchrider are extra roles that a rider can embark on. Watchrider is usually a role given to injured or old riders as it is less strenuous. As such there are no Watchriders in the wings. Searchriders on the other hand tend to be fully active riders and will take on their search activities in addition to their normal wing duties. Watchrider dutiesThe dragon pair sits and watches the comings and goings of the weyr for about six hours either from the StarStones or one of the standard approaches to the weyr. They are responsible for watching for visitors, changes in the weather or signs of Thread. It is mind numbingly boring work, although it is broken up by the arrival of visitors, both on land or by dragon. They can also send and receive messages to the weyr from people who do not have a specific connection with the person they want to get in touch with. All Search riders have the additional Search duties on top of their normal wing duties. They may sometimes be excused from drills in order to fly search. Absence should usually be confirmed with the Wingthird although permission can be granted to fly search by the Wingleader or Wingsecond as well.
